KLT sets its 2008-2009 season of plays

Kernersville Little Theatre (KLT) has selected the four plays it will present during its 2008-2009 season, and hopes to announce its 2009-2010 season by the end of 2008. KLT first presented plays in Kernersville in 1977.

September - Folly Show
The non-profit theatre group will kick off its new season with “The Queen of Bingo,” by Jeanne Michels and Phyllis Murphy. The comedy introduces Sis and Babe, long-time friends and Bingo players at St. Joseph’s, along with a host of other characters who are regulars of the game. “The Queen of Bingo” is set for the historic Cupid’s Park Theatre on the top floor of Korner’s Folly during September.

December - Church Show
At the holiday season, KLT will produce Robert Inman’s “The Christmas Bus,” at a local Kernersville church.

According to the playwright’s web site, “It’s Christmas Eve Day, and Miz Frump, the frazzled, warm-hearted director of the Peaceful Valley Orphanage, is setting off in a rickety old school bus to give her kids some magic – Christmas with families she has recruited across the county. A simple bus ride becomes a harum-scarum adventure as Frump and her orphans are pursued by the Busybodies and the suspicious Sheriff Snodgrass. Along the way, they pick up a traveling folksinger who’s on the way home to see his girlfriend, who may not be very happy to see him. ‘The Christmas Bus’ is a holiday story of love, laughter, serendipity, and family.”

February - Elementary School Show
KLT then plans on two productions at the Kernersville Elementary School auditorium – in February, “Dearly Beloved” by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, and the musical, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” in June.

“Dearly Beloved” is another Southern comedy on the heels of “Dearly Departed,” which was co-written by Jones and David Bottrell and performed by KLT several years ago. Instead of a family funeral, “Dearly Beloved” is a problem- and laugh-filled attempt to carry off a wedding and a happy reunion of the singing Futrelle Sisters all at once.

June - Musical - Elementary School Show
The season finale is the popular 1967 musical that was updated in 1999. “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” is a family-friendly day in the life of Charlie Brown, based on Charles M. Schulz’ long-running “Peanuts” comic strip. The book, music and lyrics are by Clark Gesner; the 1999 update includes additional dialogue by Michael Mayer and additional music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa. The well-known characters include Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and Schroeder.

Season Tickets and Flex-Pass
Season tickets will be available to attend the KLT shows, and individual show tickets will be sold before each show and at the door. Discounted advance tickets will also be sold for shows with the exception of the Christmas program.

Similar to last year, KLT will be offering a “Flex-Pass” season ticket program. Each Flex-Pass season ticket will come with four passes that can be used in any combination during the season – one ticket for each show, a pair of tickets each for two shows, or even four passes at a single show.

Adult Flex Passes for the 2008-09 season will cost $44; the student-senior price will be $38. For more information about season passes, call 993-6556 or visit www.kltheatre.com. A season ticket brochure will be available soon.

President's Message
“We’re looking forward to a season that will involve a wide range of cast members, technical volunteers and audiences, which fits very well with our mission as a community theatre,” said Glenn Travis, KLT president. “We continually try to improve our productions, offer a good variety of shows, and involve new and long-standing community volunteers. We think our play reading committee has located a good collection of shows to continue that effort in the coming season.”
