About the Show

Bright Star is a musical written and composed by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. It is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in 1945-46 with flashbacks to 1923. This musical is inspired by Martin and Brickell’s Grammy-winning collaboration on the 2013 bluegrass album Love Has Come for You and, in turn, the folk story of the Iron Mountain Baby. A rich tapestry of emotion—Bright Star runs June 18 through June 28, 2020.

Director

Katie Jo Icenhower has tread the boards for many years, but the journey that lead down her current dramatic path still feels fresh. After her first community theatre production, Katie Jo was so enthralled with theatre and its extended family working together towards a positive goal that she knew she wanted it to be a part of her life forever. However, at the time, the way to do that seemed to be through performing. She did show after show, truly addicted to the on-stage experience. She attended Governor’s School in drama. She toured Europe singing and dancing. She earned a bachelor’s degree in musical theatre. She studied acting at BADA in London. She worked professionally in theatres around the country. She got an agent and did a bit of film and television work. But it was once she had an opportunity to direct a group of creative individuals in sharing a story that she found where her theatre heart lies. She has directed over 50 shows and taught theatre classes for Artistic Motion, ACT, Studio One, and Broadway’s Best among others. She even decided to go back to school and get a master’s degree in theatre so that she would be fully versed in how best to conduct this collaborative creative art. Katie Jo and her husband, Scott, are currently in the process of building their own theatre in Kernersville to make theatre and sharing it the central part of their lives.
